Embracing Uncertainty: The Limits of Logic in Human Experience
February 9, 2024Quiz: Embracing Uncertainty – Navigating Life’s Unpredictabilities
March 9, 2024Introduction: Beyond the Threshold of Fear
The fears that hold us back lurk in the shadowy recesses of our minds, whispering tales of caution and restraint. Yet, within these shadows, our most significant potential and untold treasures lie hidden, waiting for the light of courage to reveal them. Joseph Campbell famously said, “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” Today, we embark on a journey to understand our fears, muster our courage, and discover the rewards that await on the other side of our apprehensions.
As Christians:
- We are called to be Courageous!
- We are called to be bold!
- We are called to stand out!
But we have allowed societal labels to conform us. We have traded our divine identity for societal identity. We have traded our gifted boldness with conformity, which has created fear in us, and until such a time that we have lost our identity, we can hardly thrive in anything. Let us look at what the Bible says about fear:
2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) ~ For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and a sound mind.
Romans 12:2 (NIV) ~ Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by renewing your mind. Then, you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.
Luke 10:19 (NKJV) ~ Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Understanding Our Fears: A Tapestry of Apprehension
Fear is an ancient and complex emotion rooted in the very essence of survival. Yet, these primal instincts often manifest as barriers to our growth and happiness in our modern landscape. From social anxieties to the dread of failure, our fears can be as diverse as they paralyze.
Psychologist Carl Jung once noted, “What you resist persists.” Understanding our fears is the first step toward overcoming them.
Helen Keller points out that “Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”
Mark Twain: ~ “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
The Journey of Courage: Paths Diverged in a Wood
Courage is the light that guides us through the darkness of our fears. It is not the absence of fear but the resolve to face it head-on. This section brings to life the stories of those who have walked the path of courage:
Here is the catch: The typical path will not make you! Your path is different! You are cut to stand out, so do not try to fit in! Let us look at three Bible characters that exemplify Godly courage:
Deborah: ~ A woman defied societal expectations to become a community leader, teaching us the courage to lead (Judges 4 & 5).
Elijah experienced a period of intense fear and withdrawal. After a significant victory against the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18), Elijah fled into the wilderness to escape Queen Jezebel’s threats (1 Kings 19). There, under a broom tree, he wished for death, overwhelmed by fear and despair. However, God met Elijah in his place of fear, not in dramatic manifestations but in a “still small voice,” encouraging him to step out again. Elijah’s journey from despair to renewed purpose demonstrates the courage to confront personal demons, relying on faith to find strength and direction. An artist chooses to share their work with the world, risking rejection for expression, embodying the courage to be vulnerable.
From Genesis 37 to 50, Joseph’s story encapsulates the courage to be vulnerable and the resilience to withstand rejection. As a young man, Joseph shared his dreams with his brothers, only to be met with envy and betrayal, resulting in his sale into slavery. Despite this, Joseph remained true to his identity and his gifts, interpreting dreams first in slavery and then in prison. His ability to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams led to his rise to power in Egypt, where he saved not only Egypt but also his family from famine. Joseph’s willingness to share his dreams, despite the initial rejection, and his faith through his trials embody the courage to be vulnerable and trust God’s plan.
These narratives, diverse in their settings and challenges, are united by the singular bravery of their protagonists.
